Derwent River Relays
This will be the sixth year of this event which takes place at Belper Rugby Club on Saturday 7th July at 2 30pm. Once again a team will consist of four runners, either four male, four female or a mixed team of four. Each runner will run the 5k distance over the footpaths either side of the River Derwent. There will be prizes for various categories as well as fastest individuals.
We would like club members to organise their own teams such as a family or works teams but if this is not possible there will be club teams available to join.
As we like to make this a family day, before the Relays there will be a Fun Run around the Rugby Club field, over distances of approximately half-mile, mile and one and a half miles. This shorter run is ideal for the younger runner or anyone who does not do much running.
The cost for the Relays is £16 per team or £20 on the day and £2 per runner for the Fun Run. So as the time is fast approaching get your team entered to any of the organisers.
As usual most of our members will be able to run but we will require help on the Saturday morning and in clearing up after the event. In certain marshal positions on the course, members will be able to marshal before running or after running.
This year again, Belper Sub-Aqua Club will be bringing their boat which will be on display along side the Pavilion while Duffield Scouts will be having their Fun Day with stalls and hot food in the middle of the ground.
We have many members new to us since last year, so to everyone, come along, bring the family and have a great afternoon. By then the weather should surely be better, we hope.

Belper Harriers Jogging Group
The club is in the process of starting a beginners group on a Tuesday evening at the same time as normal training.
We were approached by Derbyshire Sport at the end of last year, if we would be willing to start a Jogging Group. Geoff Stone and Andy Dakin came forward as volunteers and after much thought and a couple of meeting with Natalie Trethewey who now works for Derbyshire Sport we decided to give it a go. Geoff and Andy have now been on a day’s course at Loughborough and along with Natalie, Rob Pearce, Ian Hays and myself are all trained up to lead the group.
Geoff and Andy will be leading and organising the group but first we want the group promoting to try and attract runners to join.
So if anyone knows a member of their family, friend or work colleague who wishes to start running, for whatever reason, point them in the direction of the group we are setting up.
Posters will be available on Tuesday. Geoff’s contact number is 07802 567321; Andy’s 07772 350967.

Orienteering
Further to the survey we took before the Ashover Special I have had some information on an Orienteering night in Derby.
So if any of our runners are interested, starting on Thursday 28th June at Darley Park (meet at the Darley Abbey Cricket Ground at 6.30pm) and want to get involved come along to this session.
Further information can be obtained from Heather on 07507 493299 or resultstraining15@googlemail.com.

Local Races
The club had fourteen runners running in the Hairy Helmets Relays at Darley Park. We put four teams out with Ron Ilsley and Tim Holling running twice and Simon Edwards running in a team with his daughter. Over a course of two and a bit miles in this awful June weather, although the rain relented for the race, leaving the ground muddy and wet, certainly not what you would expect for a summers evening.
The Super Vets team of Ron, Tim, Dave Horton and Malcolm Weir came second in their category. They are never super vets, well not Tim, Dave or Ron. At the time of writing the full results had not been published.
The following day, Jo Southcott, Steph Ilsley and Tim Holling were in action again in the Three Lakes Classic. The event organised by Killamarsh Kestrels is mainly in South Yorkshire, on an off-road course of just over 15 miles. This was another race which had its difficulties with marshaling and unfortunately Tim and a number of other runners took the wrong direction. Tim finished in 64th place in a time of 2hrs 12mins, when knowing the form he is in at the moment you would have expected him to have finished considerably higher. Steph finished in 1hr 59mins in 25th position while Jo in 2hrs 33mins in 102nd position out of a field of 174 finishers.
Andy Nash who had also run in the Relays the previous day took on the Chesterfield Community 5k from the new football stadium. It turned out to be an excellent decision as Andy returned a personal best of 22mins 30secs, an improvement of two and a half minutes.
To complete a busy weekend for Ron Ilsley who ran in the Rampton Hospital 10k in North Nottinghamshire.
Ron in impressive form at the moment recorded another sub-40mins, to finish in 11th position in a time of 39mins 54secs. Well done to all our runners who ran in these races.
One more local race to promote is the Ambergate Up and Down race on Sunday 8th July at 1pm. This race starts at the Recreation Ground in the village and goes up to a point in Shining Cliff Woods and back again. I ran this race a number of years ago being part of Ambergate Carnival Week and is starting up again after a lapse of a few years.
The next three Tuesday runs are the Leisure Centre on June 26th, the 4th BDL at Carsington on July 3rd and a Special on July 10th.

Thanks Malcolm
